Postpartum hair loss is a common concern for new mothers, but nutritionist Lovneet Batra is urging moms to look beyond just Biotin supplements for a solution. In a recent Instagram post, Batra highlighted a more comprehensive approach to addressing hair fall that focuses on replenishing essential nutrients, rather than solely relying on Biotin.
“Postpartum hair loss is incredibly common, but one of the biggest mistakes I see is moms focusing only on Biotin,” Batra said in a video accompanying the post. She explained that during pregnancy, the body’s stores of vital nutrients like Iron, Vitamin D, and Omega-3 are often depleted, contributing to hair shedding after childbirth.
To effectively combat postpartum hair loss, Batra recommends a nutritional approach that includes a balance of the following key nutrients:
Protein: The building block of hair, protein is essential for healthy strands. Batra advises new mothers to ensure they’re consuming 80-100 grams of protein daily to strengthen their hair.
Vitamin D: Low levels of Vitamin D are linked to increased shedding. Batra suggests getting some sun exposure or considering a supplement if necessary.
Iron: Due to postpartum bleeding and sleepless nights, many new moms experience iron deficiency. Low iron levels can directly impact hair health, causing more hair to fall out.
Zinc: Zinc plays a crucial role in hair growth and maintaining scalp health. Foods such as nuts, seeds, and seafood are excellent sources of zinc.
Biotin: While Biotin can help, it’s not the only solution. Batra emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to nutrition, incorporating multiple nutrients for optimal results.
In addition to Biotin, Batra recommends supplementing with Vitamin D, Iron, Zinc, and Vitamin B for a more effective solution to postpartum hair loss. “Hair fall isn’t just a Biotin issue—it’s a nutrition issue. Fuel your body right, and your hair will thank you!” she concludes.
