Synthetic Hair Styles May Pose Health Risks, Consumer Reports Warns

by Madonna

As warmer weather approaches, many women may be considering braids, twists, and other styles using synthetic hair. However, new findings from Consumer Reports raise concerns about potential health risks associated with these popular hair products.

Consumer Reports recently tested 10 braiding hair products, and the results are alarming. According to Ginger Cowles, managing director at Consumer Reports, “90% of the packs of braiding hair that we tested contained lead.” Furthermore, the tests revealed that all of the products tested contained carcinogens, substances known to increase the risk of cancer.

While the investigation focused on a small sample of products, Cowles emphasized that there are thousands of similar items on the market, making it difficult to determine the full scope of the issue. “The FDA is not regulating this market,” Cowles noted, pointing out that there are no requirements for companies to disclose the ingredients in their products. Additionally, products that claim to be “non-toxic” or “natural” are not held to any specific standards, leaving consumers vulnerable to potentially harmful substances.

As the use of synthetic hair continues to grow in popularity, experts are urging both consumers and regulators to take a closer look at the safety of these products.
