Ariana Grande has revealed a striking new look, marking a departure from her signature blonde locks. After years of sporting a blonde style reminiscent of her role as Glinda in Wicked, the singer and actress debuted a bold change on April 8, sharing behind-the-scenes images from her short film and music video for the recently released song “Brighter Days.”
In the Instagram post, Grande showcased her new auburn hair, styled in a side-parted ponytail with a curled front piece framing her forehead. She complemented the look with one of the costumes from the music video, adding a heart and infinity emoji to her caption.
Grande’s blonde hair has been a fixture since 2023, as she adapted her look for her role in Wicked. Prior to that, she embraced a softer, darker blonde inspired by Audrey Hepburn, a change crafted by her colorist, Rachel Bodt. “We went for a warm, light auburn-brown base with chunky contoured highlights to create contrast,” Bodt shared with InStyle. “The highlights and base colors were kept warm so they complemented each other, creating a bold yet cohesive look.”
This recent transformation is Grande’s first significant hair change in years. Before her Wicked days, the singer was known for her signature dark brunette hair, with occasional experiments in blonde highlights. The last time she sported a red hue was in 2012 when she wore bright red locks for her role as Cat Valentine on Victorious.
Reflecting on her past red hair, Grande shared on the Zack Sang Show that she associates the color with her character. “It’s kind of like the red was Cat, and that was very much a character, and it was very much a portion of my life that I love and I am so grateful for,” she explained. “And I look at it and I love it, and I see red hair … and I think fondly of that, but again, it’s not me.”
