Helping Hands, Healing Hair: Hair We Share’s United Salons of America Fundraiser Returns for 2025

by Madonna

JERICHO, NY — April 10, 2025 — The beauty industry is once again coming together for a powerful cause as Hair We Share launches the second annual United Salons of America (USA) fundraiser. Running throughout April 2025, this national initiative supports individuals experiencing medical hair loss by turning donated ponytails into custom-made wigs—and restoring confidence in the process.

Founded in 2024 by Hair We Share co-founders Dean Riskin and Suzanne Chimera, alongside Jo Marie, Chairperson of the initiative, United Salons of America was inspired by a deeply personal moment: delivering a custom wig to a young girl undergoing cancer treatment. That single act of kindness sparked a wider vision—to unite the salon industry in support of those in need.

Expanding the Mission

While salons remain at the heart of the movement, organizers are calling on businesses of all kinds to get involved. From sponsorships and donations to in-store fundraising and awareness campaigns, United Salons of America is building a nationwide community dedicated to making high-quality wigs accessible to patients across the country.

“This mission began in salons, but it belongs to everyone,” said Jo Marie. “Anyone can contribute—whether by donating, volunteering, or simply spreading the word. It’s about lifting people up during the most difficult moments of their lives.”

A Pandemic-Driven Surge in Hair Donations

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hair We Share experienced an unexpected influx of hair donations from individuals who had grown their hair out during lockdowns. While the generosity was overwhelming, it also underscored a growing challenge: the need for funding to transform these donations into wearable wigs.

“The outpouring of support was incredible, but hair alone doesn’t make a wig,” said co-founder Suzanne Chimera. “We need the resources to process and style each piece into something truly life-changing. We owe it to our donors and the people waiting for wigs to complete this important work.”

Custom Craftsmanship and Compassion

Turning a ponytail into a fully styled wig is a labor-intensive process involving skilled professionals. From initial preparation to final styling, each wig is crafted to reflect the personality, preferences, and needs of its recipient. Salons participating in the fundraiser donate their time and talents to ensure every wig looks natural and feels empowering.

“I volunteer because I’ve seen the transformation these wigs can bring,” said Jo Marie. “They restore more than just hair—they bring back dignity, hope, and a sense of normalcy for patients facing life-altering diagnoses.”

A Call to Action

With dozens of successful transformations already completed, Hair We Share is aiming to reach even more people in 2025 through expanded partnerships and broader community engagement.

“United Salons of America is not just a salon effort—it’s a community movement,” said Jo Marie. “We’re asking individuals and businesses alike to help us bridge the gap between compassion and action. Together, we can turn donated hair into powerful symbols of resilience.”
