Billie Eilish Reflects on Her Favorite Hair Color: ‘I Felt Like I Was Becoming Who I Am’

by Madonna

LONDON — Billie Eilish has never shied away from bold beauty choices, but among her many hair transformations, one stands out as the most defining of her personal and artistic evolution.

Speaking with British Vogue on April 14 as part of a celebrity Q&A feature, the 23-year-old Grammy and Oscar-winning singer revealed that her iconic green-and-black hairstyle holds a special place in her heart. Responding to a question from actor Colman Domingo about her favorite hair colors over the years, Eilish shared that her green roots period represented a turning point in both her career and self-identity.

“Green and black especially felt like such a personal and career-defining look for me,” she said. “I felt so exactly who I was at that time.”

Eilish described the hue as uniquely hers. “That shade of green was like my color for so long,” she said. “Hair, nails, clothes. It was such a magical period for me, and it was so intense. I felt like I was becoming who I am.”

In a follow-up moment with rapper Nicki Minaj, Eilish affectionately dubbed the vibrant look “The Billie.”

The singer, known for her evolving style, also looked back with humor at some of her more eccentric fashion choices. When British Vogue’s head of editorial content Chioma Nnadi asked if any past looks made her cringe, Eilish laughed off any regrets.

“I do have to give myself credit for always going so hard,” she said. “I wore like actual bouncy balls with straps on the bottom of my shoes once… But again: I committed to the bit and I regret nothing.”

Despite her confidence today, Eilish has previously opened up about the struggles she’s faced regarding her appearance — with hair being a major part of that journey. In a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, she admitted that her dramatic switch to platinum blonde in 2021, which debuted at the Met Gala, left her feeling lost.

“And then I dyed my hair blond and I immediately was like, ‘Oh, I have no idea who I am,’” she recalled.

The shift matched the softer aesthetic of her second album, Happier Than Ever, but Eilish later realized it didn’t reflect her true self. Even returning to a dark chocolate tone didn’t feel right.

“I look back at that and I’m like, ‘Who is this brunette?’ A brunette! That wasn’t me,” she said.

Her brother and longtime collaborator Finneas O’Connell offered his own interpretation in the Rolling Stone profile, describing the album as “a coping mechanism,” likening it to “being in a tornado cellar, reading a cute little story.”

Now, as Eilish continues to evolve both musically and personally, it’s clear that her green-and-black era was more than just a hair color — it was a symbol of self-discovery and creative power.
