As spring sunshine gives way to the UK’s signature rainy spells, many are finding themselves unprepared for the sudden switch in weather — and the frizzy hair that often comes with it. But is there a way to tame frizz when caught in the rain?
Experts say yes. While carrying an umbrella is the first line of defense, top hairstylists across the UK are sharing practical advice to help keep hair smooth and manageable, even in damp conditions.
Why Hair Frizzes in the Rain
According to Victoria Panting, technical educator at Paul Mitchell, frizz is caused when the hair’s cuticle — the outer protective layer — lifts. “The cuticle is hydrophilic, meaning it loves water,” she explains. “When it absorbs moisture from the air, the hair strands swell, the cuticle opens, and the smooth surface is lost.”
This effect becomes more pronounced in humid or damp environments, and especially so if the hair is already compromised. “If hair is damaged by heat styling or chemical treatments, it struggles to retain moisture and becomes more susceptible to frizz,” Panting adds.
How to Prep Hair Before Heading Out
Celebrity hairstylist Aaron Carlo — known for working with stars like Jade Thirlwall and Alesha Dixon — emphasizes the importance of pre-emptive hydration. “Hair is more likely to frizz if it’s lacking moisture,” he says. “Start with the right moisturising shampoo and conditioner, and follow up with a leave-in anti-frizz or humidity cream.”
Look for products containing hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and natural oils. These help to lock in moisture and shield the hair against environmental humidity.
Panting also recommends styling hair in ways that minimize exposure to the elements. “Braids, buns, and twists can help secure hair and reduce flyaways,” she says, noting that these styles work particularly well in humid climates or during holidays.
Quick Fixes for Wet and Frizzy Hair
Caught in a sudden downpour? There are still ways to rescue your style. While Panting admits reversing frizz completely is difficult, it can be managed with the popular “LOC” method:
L (Leave-in): Start by applying a leave-in conditioner to damp hair.
O (Oil): Seal in the moisture with a nourishing oil or serum.
C (Cream): Finish with a styling cream, gel, or mousse to hold everything in place.
“Keeping a travel-sized hydrating product on hand is a smart move,” Panting says. Incorporating the LOC method into your regular hair routine can also reduce long-term frizz.
Emergency Touch-Ups on the Go
Even without a full toolkit, there are ways to manage frizz in a pinch. “You need to get it dry as soon as possible,” says Carlo. “Smooth down the hair shaft to flatten the cuticle — whether that’s using a hand dryer or a soft cloth.”
He also recommends carrying a small bottle of smoothing cream or oil, and for those especially prone to frizz, cordless straightening tools can be a game-changer.
In short, while April showers may be inevitable, frizzy hair doesn’t have to be. With the right preparation and a few expert tricks, you can weather the storm with confidence — and great hair.
