Innovative Black Hair Care Vending Machine Debuts at The University of Olivet

by Madonna

Traditionally associated with dispensing snacks and confectionery, vending machines have taken an innovative twist at The University of Olivet, where the first-of-its-kind “Beauty Genie” vending machine has emerged. Introduced in August, this novel addition to the rural college campus provides convenient access to a range of hair care products, catering particularly to the needs of Black students.

The arrival of the Beauty Genie has swiftly garnered enthusiasm and appreciation, creating a sense of comfort and inclusion within the student community. Rahya Kelley, the brand ambassador, emphasized the machine’s significance in promoting a welcoming atmosphere. Kelley shared, “Having this here makes people feel comfortable.”

The vending machine stands as a beacon of convenience, offering an array of hair care essentials accessible through a simple touch interface. From shampoos to hair wraps, the machine caters comprehensively to diverse hair care needs. Kelley acknowledged that the campus is predominantly white and lacks proximity to specialized beauty supply stores. Prior to the Beauty Genie’s installation, Kelley often found herself stocking up on products during visits back home. This proved challenging for students without personal transportation, prompting concerns about accessibility.

Junior Landen Cooley expressed relief, stating, “It’s like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders. For people who can’t drive, it’s like we finally have something nearby.” The sentiment was echoed by Senior David Sinkler, who urged fellow students to embrace the opportunity to experiment with different products. The machine’s presence sends a resounding message of support to the student body, resonating with Associate Dean of Student Life Joshua Gillespie. Gillespie affirmed, “It’s important to have a machine like the Beauty Genie to remind students that we see them, we hear them, and we support them.”

The significance of this initiative reaches beyond convenience, fostering an environment where diverse voices are acknowledged and embraced. Kelley eloquently conveyed her sense of belonging, stating, “I’ve always been a part of things that belong to other people, where this is me.”

Kelley envisions the Beauty Genie’s influence extending beyond Olivet’s campus. Her aspirations encompass introducing this innovative solution to other colleges, ensuring that the benefits of accessible hair care transcend geographical boundaries.

The introduction of the Beauty Genie marks a pioneering step towards inclusivity and convenience, recognizing and addressing the unique needs of Black students in the realm of hair care.
