For those with a passion for hair and the desire to embark on a fulfilling career, hairdressing might be the perfect choice. It’s a profession that allows for creativity and makes a significant positive impact on clients’ confidence and well-being. Hairdressing offers numerous transferable skills and is consistently ranked as one of the happiest and most satisfying careers globally.
If you’re looking to start your journey in the hairdressing sector but aren’t sure where to begin, the Level 1 Hairdressing and Barbering qualification offered by ACT’s Jobs Growth Wales + program could be the ideal starting point. This program, delivered within a salon setting, provides learners with a range of skills, including basic techniques, color assistance, and the art of creating updos. Participants gain valuable hands-on experience, working full-time in a placement that can lead to an apprenticeship.
Darla Wathen from Cardiff is one learner who has found this program beneficial. Her passion for hair and the desire to acquire the skills necessary to excel in the industry led her to this qualification. Through her placement at Henderson & Co salon and with the support of ACT tutor Charlotte Sims, Darla has been able to develop her skills and confidence in a salon setting.
Darla expressed her enthusiasm for her placement, stating, “My favorite thing about the placement is that it doesn’t feel like I’m going to work at all – it’s like going back to my second family. I also love the advice different stylists give. Every day I learn and grow.”
Beyond acquiring new skills, Darla’s confidence has significantly improved. She praised the support she received from her tutors at ACT, particularly Charlotte Sims, who helped her believe in herself and overcome her anxiety and nervousness during interviews.
Now, Darla is looking ahead to becoming a fully qualified hairdresser and plans to continue sharing her passion for hair with her clients.
Tutor Charlotte Sims commended Darla’s progress, acknowledging her potential and hard work. She described Darla as an “excellent learner” who was always willing to put in maximum effort. The salon, Henderson & Co, recognized Darla’s talent and commitment, and it has been a supportive environment for her.
Darla’s journey is a testament to her determination, hard work, and passion for the hair industry. Despite previous barriers, she has excelled in her NVQL1 Hairdressing qualification, completing it in just six months. Now, she has been offered a Level 2 hairdressing apprenticeship at Henderson & Co, marking an exciting step in her career.
ACT’s Mary Foley, who worked with Darla as her course assessor, highlighted her remarkable progress and expressed pride in Darla’s accomplishments. Mary emphasized that Darla has shown how determination, hard work, and a love for the hair industry can overcome barriers and lead to a successful and fulfilling career. Darla is now a valuable asset to the salon, and her future in the industry looks promising.
