Ice Spice, the Bronx native and rising star known for her bold fashion and beauty choices, has made waves with her iconic, fiery hair, often seen in a bright, orangey copper hue. However, it may come as a surprise to many that her natural hair color is quite different. Contrary to the fiery tones she’s known for, Ice Spice’s true hair color is black.
Though her Instagram feed offers no glimpses of her natural hair color, an old high school photo of Ice Spice recently resurfaced on the internet. The picture portrays her with long, straight, jet-black hair. To set the record straight, the “Deli” singer addressed the old image in a conversation with MTV.
In the chat, she holds up the picture and affirms its authenticity while sporting her signature bouncy, shoulder-length curls in the red hue that has become her trademark. She debunks the misconception that her hair is naturally straight, clarifying that her hair was straightened in the old photo. “My hair’s always been curly since I was born,” she asserts.
While Ice Spice has sported various wigs during her rise to fame, she often flaunts her natural curls dyed in her favorite copper or ginger-brown shade. In an interview with British Vogue in April 2023, she discussed her numerous hair transformations over the years, saying, “Besides the current curly short ‘fro, I’ve had pretty much every hairstyle in the book. Every time I change my hair, I look like a different person. I’ve done curly wigs, straight wigs, short wigs, long wigs; I’ve done braids, swoops—basically everything. I tried everything and just got back to square one.”
Despite her ability to rock a multitude of hairstyles and hair colors with confidence, Ice Spice initially faced challenges when trying to find her identity in the spotlight. In a candid 2022 conversation with R&B legend Erykah Badu for Interview Magazine, she revealed that she wasn’t comfortable displaying her natural curls when she first entered the music scene. “When I started putting music out, I was wearing wigs a lot,” she admitted. “I didn’t show my natural hair until I put out ‘No Clarity’ in November 2021. I noticed it was doing so much better than all my previous work. I don’t think my fan base was ready for me to be in heels and a lace front. I think they like that I’m being myself.”
