Goldiloxx: A Queer-Friendly Haven in Brookfield for Hair Enthusiasts

by Madonna

Brookfield has become home to Goldiloxx, a freshly unveiled, queer and family-owned hair salon, where gold and white decor meets a vision of inclusivity. This venture is the brainchild of cousins Cynthia Citro and Giovanna Schaffrath, both driven by a shared passion for hairstyling and a commitment to creating a welcoming space for everyone.

Goldiloxx’s roots trace back to Berwyn, where Citro established a salon with the same name in 2016. The salon, facing its share of challenges, shut its doors in February of the previous year due to Citro’s battle with breast cancer and the subsequent impact of the COVID-19 lockdown. Undeterred, Citro continued freelancing after her cancer went into remission.

Schaffrath, an Oak Park native with a decade of experience in hair and special effects makeup, joined forces with Citro, fostering a professional relationship that deepened over time. Unbeknownst to them, a familial connection surfaced during a conversation with Schaffrath’s grandmother, adding a familial dimension to their partnership.

Despite the personal and professional hurdles, Citro and Schaffrath envisioned a salon that not only provided hairstyling services but also embraced a culture of acceptance. The search for the ideal location led them to Brookfield, where they found not just a place for their business but a community that embraced their vision.

Brookfield’s abundance of women business owners resonated with Citro and Schaffrath, solidifying their choice of location. The chamber of commerce facilitated a smooth process, reflecting the supportive atmosphere they encountered throughout the community.

The name Goldiloxx, a nod to the familiar tale of Goldilocks and the three bears, was inspired during a tattoo session. Citro, putting her own spin on it, envisioned marquee letters, capturing the essence of the salon’s uniqueness.

The dynamic between Citro and Schaffrath is a harmonious blend of contrasting energies. Citro, specializing in extensions, complements Schaffrath’s expertise in alternative cuts and bold hair colors. Their energy transcends their work, with Schaffrath describing Citro as a “firecracker” while being her “angel on her shoulder.”

Goldiloxx prides itself on being a safe space, epitomized by a judgment-free zone and a gender-neutral bathroom. Schaffrath ensures phone consultations respect clients’ identities and goals, fostering an inclusive environment.

Excitement fills the air as Goldiloxx becomes a part of the Brookfield community, open from Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering a haven for all hair enthusiasts. Located at 9152 Broadway Ave, Goldiloxx operates on an appointment-only basis, ready to welcome those seeking a unique and inclusive hairstyling experience.
