Colombian actress Sofía Vergara, renowned for her role as Gloria in the long-running series Modern Family, recently shared insights into a pivotal decision that shaped her Hollywood journey—changing her natural blonde hair to a darker hue.
Vergara initiated her Hollywood career in 2002 with the film Big Trouble. However, in a candid interview, she disclosed that early in her career, she faced pressure to conform to stereotypical expectations of how Latina women should look. In 2013, she revealed that she was urged to dye her naturally blonde hair darker, citing the industry’s perception that Latin women should have darker hair.
“The way that I looked was not the way that Hollywood really saw Latina women. They were expecting a more dark-haired woman. It was difficult because they were a little confused, like, ‘This woman sounds like a Latin woman but she’s blonde,'” Vergara recalled.
Opting to align with industry expectations, Vergara made the decision to change her hair color to a darker shade, a move she acknowledged as a “hard decision,” albeit not as drastic as “cutting [her] fingers off.”
The strategic shift in her appearance proved pivotal, as shortly after the transformation, Vergara inked a significant deal with ABC. This deal ultimately led to her iconic portrayal of Gloria in Modern Family, a role she embodied for 11 years.
Reflecting on the impact of her transformed appearance, Vergara shared, “After the third season, I thought, ‘Maybe now that everybody knows Gloria is Latin and they know me, I could go back to my more natural hair color.’ So I did little by little, and it was fine.”
